Introducing Merindah-Gunya

Discovery Educational is pleased to announce access to the wonderful contemporary art of Bayley Mifsud, an Aboriginal artist born in the country town of Warrnambool. She takes great pride in her heritage as a descendant of the Peek and Kirrae Whurrong clans. For Bayley, practicing and sharing her culture through art and storytelling holds immense significance. Her Aboriginal name is Merindah-Gunya meaning “Beautiful Spirit” in Peek Whurrong language, which was gifted to her through a naming ceremony on Country, supported by her Elders and community.

The featured work here, Thookay (Child), has a particular resonance for the Discovery team, as it tells the story of an Aboriginal child learning traditional dances and songs from their Elders, fostering a deep connection to their heritage and community. The analogy to the classroom learning experience gives it a depth that is a joy to impart.

Keep your eye out as we activate more vibrant and meaningful classroom essentials featuring the art of this exciting contemporary artist.
